A Cultural Framework for family development

NSROP serves youth and families in the DMV. Our curriculum is built on centuries of cultural wisdom, and modern developmental science helping Black parents and caregivers to cultivate; identity, discipline, and purpose.

Why We Do This Work

We seek to provide BLACK parents with the knowledge and tools to remind them of our rich history and the strengths of Black Families that enabled us to overcome the MAAFA, RECONSTRUCTION, AND THE JIM CROW PERIOD IN THE UNITED STATES. Strengths of Black Families are; Kinship ties, Work Ethic, Religious Faith.

Learning, Doing, and Being are all different aspects of building skills in any subject. It’s the same way for parenting skills. There is no magic bullet to “make you get it”! Anything worthwhile takes time and effort, and it is so with this training. Parenting is the most important and most difficult work you will ever do, and it will take years of practice, and trial and error before you think you’ve got it right. And being a Black parent is the most challenging!

Why are Strengths of the Black Family and other Parental Programs so Essential:

Given the alarming levels of generational trauma experienced by Black families, the Strength of the Black Family is an ideal tool for disrupting the intentional dehumanization of Black families. This daily dehumanization is omnipresent in today’s society and manifests in draconian policies and mass media portrayals that negatively impact the psyche of Black families. From mass incarceration to the misdiagnosis of Black children placed in special education versus available slots for gifted and talented programs, Black parents continue to brainstorm ways to ensure their children are racially literate and have the tools to navigate within a toxic society

The Strength of Black Family is a beacon of hope, empowering families with the tools, vision, fortitude, and support networks to address Black families’ complex issues. It builds on emotional intelligence and resiliency, providing families with a toolkit of resources to elevate their families.
